Red Sox reach 6-year contract extension with Bogaerts
The Boston Red Sox signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts to a six-year contract extension that spans the 2020-2025 seasons, with a vesting option for 2026, the team announced Monday.
The deal appears to be worth $132 million and includes an opt-out clause that Bogaerts can exercise following the 2022 season, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN on Sunday.
Bogaerts will make $12 million for the 2019 season, which had already been agreed upon. From 2020 through 2025, he will reportedly earn $120 million should he not exercise his opt-out, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The 26-year-old was slated to reach free agency after this season but can now stay with the only pro team he's ever known through his age-32 season.
Bogaerts, an All-Star in 2016, has established himself as a key component of Boston's offensive core. In 2018, he hit .288/.360/.522 with 23 home runs, 45 doubles, and 103 RBIs in 136 games.
He's the latest player to sign an extension with the Red Sox in 2019 after ace left-hander Chris Sale agreed to a five-year extension earlier in March.
With Bogaerts, Sale, David Price, and J.D. Martinez under contract long term, that leaves Mookie Betts closest to free agency among Boston's stars. He's eligible to hit the open market after the 2020 season.
