The San Francisco Giants and veteran free-agent outfielder Cameron Maybin are finalizing a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, sources told Andrew Baggarly and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Completion of the contract is pending the results of a physical, reports Janie McCauley of The Associated Press.

Maybin, who will turn 32 in April, split his 2018 season between the Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners. Over 129 games, the 12-year veteran hit .249/.326/.336 with four home runs, 28 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. Defensively, he saw time at all three outfield positions and collected six defensive runs saved in 792 1/3 total defensive innings.

In San Francisco, Maybin will likely compete for a backup spot on the team's roster where he could offer speed and defense off the bench and possibly be utilized in a platoon role. His right-handed bat and ability to play center field could give him a leg up on his competitors; among the other outfielders in Giants camp, only Rule 5 draft pick Drew Ferguson offers similar tools, according to Baggarly.

Maybin is the latest veteran position player to receive an invitation to Giants camp. Fellow outfielder Gerardo Parra and utility man Yangervis Solarte also reportedly inked similar contracts this week.
