Brian Dozier signed a one-year, $9-million contract last week to join the Washington Nationals for 2019. He will likely enter the season as the team's starting second baseman - but he didn't have to be a National.

Speaking with reporters Tuesday, Dozier said Washington wasn't the only team looking to sign him and that there were more lucrative deals on the table before he made his choice.

"Basically, what it came down to was just where my wife and I wanted to be," the former All-Star said, according to Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports. "With numerous offers and more years and all that kind of stuff, you find that this fit seemed like the best fit for my wife and I. And we couldn’t be any happier."

The 31-year-old will be looking to return to form following a down season in which he slashed .215/.305/.391.

From 2013 through 2017, Dozier showcased a combination of power and speed by slashing .252/.333/.465 with 145 home runs, 170 doubles, and 81 stolen bases over 767 games as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

He attributed his recent struggles to bad habits and a lingering injury that has since healed, adding that he expects to be fully ready for spring training.
