Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who appeared to be struggling through an injury in the second half of the season and during the postseason, underwent surgery on his right knee on Friday, general manager Jeff Luhnow announced on Saturday, per MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.

The Astros did not officially disclose what kind of surgery was performed on Altuve but a source told McTaggart that the procedure repaired a right kneecap avulsion fracture.

He's expected to be fully recovered for the start of spring training, according to the team.

The performance of the 2017 American League MVP diminished after he left a game with right knee discomfort in late July.

"He's hurt," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Altuve during the American League Championship Series, according to MLB.com's Richard Justice. "If it was any other time of the year, he wouldn't be playing. His teammates revere him."

Altuve hit .265/.324/.412 in eight postseason games for Houston before they were eliminated by the Boston Red Sox on Thursday.
