Reds to interview John Farrell for manager job
The Cincinnati Reds will interview former Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays skipper John Farrell for the team's manager position, president of baseball operations Dick Williams told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
Farrell spent a combined eight seasons with Boston, first from 2007-2010 as a pitching coach, and then from 2013-2017 as the team's manager, winning a World Series championship in 2013 before being fired after the 2017 campaign. He joined the Reds as a scout in March.
After opening the year with a 3-15 record, the Reds fired Bryan Price and replaced him with Jim Riggleman as the team's bench boss. Riggleman, who will get a chance to interview after the season, said he would like the team to remove the "interim" title next to his job description, according to Glenn Sattell of MLB.com.
"I'm really happy to have been able to do this," Riggleman said of his opportunity with the Reds. "I hope I continue to do it. Just really respect whatever decision the ownership comes with, but certainly, I want to continue."
In addition to Farrell, the Reds have already interviewed Pat Kelly, Billy Hatcher, and Freddy Benavides for the position, all of whom are on the coaching staff. Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin is not under consideration.
So far, no one outside the Reds organization has been interviewed.
