The Detroit Tigers' future suffered a hit on Tuesday when right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer was diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee, manager Ron Gardenhire told Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.

Fulmer left an outing Saturday with soreness in his right knee and an MRI later revealed his meniscus had been damaged.

The 25-year-old is going to receive a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday and could potentially undergo surgery later this week.

Recovery time from surgery of this nature is typically three-to-four months, according to a sports medical professional Fenech spoke with.

"The plan is for him to be pitching next spring for us," Gardenhire said, according to The Detroit News. "If we have to adjust, we have to adjust.

"But they want to get it right and make sure this thing is fixed."

Fulmer, the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year, was in the midst of the worst big-league season of his career with the rebuilding Tigers, posting a 3-12 record with a 4.69 ERA in 24 starts.
