Cubs' Hamels blames Brewers fans for weak rivalry between teams
Chicago Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels stymied the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings on Monday. Then he went after the Miller Park faithful.
Despite being in a relatively tight race in the NL Central standings, Hamels doesn't think there's much of a rivalry between the Cubs and Brewers, and he lays the brunt of the blame at the feet of Milwaukee's fans, according to Tony Andracki of NBC Sports Chicago.
"I mean, that's kinda tough. I know the rivalries I've had in the past - you can definitely feel it," Hamels said. "When you have majority Cubs fans in the stands, I don't know if that's a rivalry yet. I've been in rivalries. They're not gonna like me for the comment, but you can look at the ticket sales.
"I think when they start getting a little bit closer and their fans sell out, then I think that's kind of the understanding. But the Cubs fans travel well. They were representing us pretty well. I think it's just a matter of us going out there and playing hard."
Ouch.
Brewers fans will have to take solace in the fact that their team overcame a late Cubs lead to leave with the win. After the win, the Brewers sit four games back of the Cubs for the division lead.
