In the near future, Petco Park - the home of the San Diego Padres - may be at the corner of Tony Gwynn Drive and Trevor Hoffman Way.

Late Wednesday night, San Diego's Downtown Community Planning Council voted to rename a portion of Park Boulevard after Hoffman, according to Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. The stretch of road would run from Tony Gwynn Drive, at the south of Petco Park, to Imperial Drive, slightly northeast.

San Diego's City Council will have final approval, and a date to consider renaming the roadway has not yet been determined.

Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July. The legendary closer recorded 601 saves, which still leads the National League.

Until Hoffman's induction, Gwynn and Dave Winfield were the only players in Cooperstown wearing a Padres logo on their plaque.

The Padres are also set to unveil a statue of Hoffman prior to Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
