Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is recovering in stable condition from a bacterial infection that was considered life threatening a few days ago.

Indians president Chris Antonetti addressed reporters Monday to update the status of the 30-year-old outfielder who was hospitalized last week with what the team initially called an undisclosed medical condition.

"Leonys is currently in stable condition," Antonetti said, according to MLB.com. "He continues to get treatment at the Cleveland Clinic. And we're optimistic that he'll have a full recovery.

"Now, to give you a little bit of backstory of how we got to this point, Leonys had a bacterial infection that entered his blood stream, and when it entered his blood stream, it produced toxins. Those toxins did damage to his internal organs and the functioning of those organs was compromised, and it was severe. ... Thankfully, he's made a lot of progress in the last 24 to 36 hours, and he's regained a lot of the organ function."

Antonetti added that Martin was able to get out of bed and sit in a chair for a few hours Sunday. There is no timetable for his return.

"Progress will be measured in weeks, not days," Antonetti said, according to Zach Meisel of The Athletic.

The Indians acquired Martin in a trade from the Detroit Tigers on July 31. He appeared in six games before falling ill last Tuesday and being placed on the disabled list.
