The New York Yankees have informed pitcher Sonny Gray that he's being moved to the bullpen.

The 28-year-old righty owns a bloated 5.56 ERA through 21 starts this season, well above his career rate of 3.45 heading into 2018. Gray's struggles reached a nadir in his most recent start, when he gave up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings and left the field to a chorus of boos from the Yankees' faithful.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that non-waiver trade deadline acquisition Lance Lynn will take Gray's spot in the rotation, according to WFAN's Chris Carlin.

Gray has made just two relief appearances in his career - his first two major league outings - both with the Oakland Athletics in 2013. He gave up two hits and a walk while striking out six batters in four innings across the two outings.

“I don’t think my days as a starting pitcher in this league are over,” Gray said of the decision, according to Sherman.
