Cardinals' Poncedeleon throws 7 no-hit innings in MLB debut
Making his major-league debut Monday, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon tossed seven no-hit innings against the Cincinnati Reds.
The 26-year-old threw 116 pitches before he was lifted for pinch hitter Harrison Bader in the top of the eighth. Poncedeleon allowed three walks while striking out three through his seven frames. Right-handed reliever Jordan Hicks took over in the subsequent inning and gave up a one-out single to Phillip Ervin.

Cincinnati wound up walking off St. Louis by scoring two runs in the ninth, preventing Poncedeleon from earning the win.
Last May, Poncedeleon underwent brain surgery to relieve pressure from swelling after taking a comebacker to the head in a start for the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds.
Bumpus Jones famously threw a no-hitter during his first major-league appearance in 1892. Since then, no pitcher has thrown a no-no in their debut.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling came close in April 2016, but he was removed with one out in the eighth inning.
Earlier this season, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Nick Kingham was removed after seven no-hit frames as well. He'd even carried a perfect game into the seventh.
Poncedeleon was promoted from the minors in early June but didn't make an appearance before getting sent back down three days later. He was recalled again Monday. Through 92 innings in Triple-A, the right-hander owns a 2.15 ERA and 3.86 FIP.
