Report: Padres' top prospect Tatis likely out for season

Fernando Tatis Jr., the San Diego Padres' top prospect and MLB Pipeline's No. 3 farmhand in all of baseball, is expected to undergo thumb surgery on his catching hand and will likely miss the remainder of the season, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Tribune.

X-rays on the shortstop's hand reportedly uncovered a fracture, but early indications are that the injury won't affect Tatis beyond this season. The 19-year-old is expected to undergo an MRI over the weekend.

According to Sanders, the swelling could still go down, which could lead to Tatis skipping surgery.

In 88 games with Double-A San Antonio this year, he has posted a .286/.355/.507 slash line with 16 home runs and 16 stolen bases. The Dominican native was the starting shortstop for the World Team at the 2018 Futures Game and hit second.

Tatis wasn't expected to make his major-league debut this year, but he still leads a loaded Padres farm system that added top catching prospect Francisco Mejia from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday.
