Brewers demote struggling Santana, recall Miller from Triple-A

The Milwaukee Brewers own the best record (45-30) in the National League entering play Saturday. Offseason additions Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich have paid immediate dividends, and the team's overcome injuries to key contributors like Eric Thames and Jimmy Nelson.

But it hasn't been all sunshine and roses. The Brewers optioned struggling outfielder Domingo Santana to Triple-A on Saturday, and recalled the versatile Brad Miller.

In 2017, Santana hit .278/.371/.505 with 30 home runs, finishing second to Travis Shaw in wins above replacement. This season has been a different story - he's putting up worse numbers in every offensive category through 62 games, batting .249/.313/.354 with three homers while striking out 32.7 percent of the time.

His season has bottomed out in June, as he's hit .167 over nine contests and hasn't driven in a single run.

Miller was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Ji-Man Choi earlier in June, days after being designated for assignment. While he hasn't exactly lit it up in Triple-A (.185/.258/.296 in eight games), he can play virtually every defensive position on the diamond.

With Jesus Aguilar raking at the plate, and Thames healthy, the 25-year-old Santana appears to have been the odd man out.
