Cincinnati Reds top prospect Nick Senzel will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right index finger, the team announced Saturday, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic.

Senzel, a consensus top-10 MLB prospect, suffered the injury Friday night. He was enjoying a marvelous campaign in Triple-A, slashing .310/.378/.509 in 44 games for the Louisville Bats.

With the Reds glued to the basement of the NL Central standings, it seemed likely Senzel would've been promoted to the major-league club before the end of this season.

The 23-year-old was drafted second overall by Cincinnati in 2016. He's split time this year between second base and third base.
