Yankees' 50th win possibly foreshadows World Series victory

The New York Yankees blasted a pair of two-run home runs off Seattle Mariners starter James Paxton in the first inning of Thursday's game, and it was all they needed to reach the 50-win plateau.

If franchise history is any indication, the 4-3 victory may have secured a World Series championship months in advance:

While the Yankees aren't the first team to arrive at 50 wins - the Houston Astros did it Wednesday night - they did reach it in fewer games thanks to a bundle of contests being postponed by rain. Their .694 winning percentage is tops in the league.

And as storied as the Bronx Bombers are, they are on pace for one of their best-ever seasons.

June has been the turning point. The Yankees have gone 15-5 since the calendar flipped and haven't lost a series since late May. Thursday's win completed a three-game sweep of the Mariners, who otherwise have had a solid campaign (46-29) in their own right.

Simply put, the Yankees are scary.
