Orioles designate Alvarez for assignment

The Baltimore Orioles have seen enough of Pedro Alvarez's scuffling bat.
The club designated the veteran slugger for assignment on Tuesday, and promoted infielder Steve Wilkerson from Triple-A Norfolk.
Alvarez has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Orioles. In 45 games this year, he slashed .180/.283/.414 with eight home runs, two doubles, and 36 strikeouts. He managed one hit in his last 18 at-bats.
