The Houston Astros rewarded the architect of their 2017 World Series championship team with an extension and a new job title.

The club announced Monday that Jeff Luhnow has been promoted to president of baseball operations and has agreed to a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2023 season. He'll also retain his previous title as general manager.

"I am excited and honored to be extending my commitment to this great organization and the city of Houston," Luhnow said in a statement. "While we are proud of what we have accomplished in a short time, we are not done yet. I am thankful to (owner) Jim Crane and the organization for believing in me and I am grateful to all of the fans who have welcomed me and my family as we made Houston our home. Our goal remains the same - to do everything we can to bring multiple championships to our fans, this organization, and the community."

Luhow was hired as Houston's 12th GM ahead of the 2012 season. Since then, the team has reached the postseason twice, winning the franchise's first World Series title last year.

"This is very well-deserved," Crane commented. "Jeff has done an outstanding job in delivering on the vision that he outlined for us when we hired him several years ago... We have popular, exciting players, an energized fan base, and a very bright future. We are excited that Jeff will be part of our future for a long time."
