Report: Dombrowski doesn't believe Red Sox match up for Machado trade

After a number of blockbuster deals, there likely isn't enough prospect capital for the Boston Red Sox to trade for Manny Machado this summer.

Despite Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski reportedly contacting the Orioles about the three-time All-Star's availability, he's concluded that the team likely does not match up on a trade, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The Red Sox have one of the worst prospect pools in baseball after trading away future assets in deals for Chris Sale, Drew Pomeranz, Craig Kimbrel, and Tyler Thornburg over the last few seasons. The club does have Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers, who are 24 and 21 years old, but the pair are a part of the team's core and it would be hard to swallow for Dombrowski to deal either for a rental in Machado.

While Machado would make the Red Sox a better team immediately, the club does have Xander Bogaerts at shortstop, and would need to use Machado at third. After a poor start, Devers has picked it up of late, slashing .313/.327/.521 with two home runs over his last 12 games, while also seeing his defense improve.

Machado is enjoying an excellent season and will be the top position player available at the deadline given his ability to play both shortstop and third base. The Orioles are believed to prefer one elite prospect in return over a watered-down package of average prospects.

Orioles general manager Dan Duquette has also made it known that Machado has no interest in signing an extension with the team that acquires him and fully intends to pursue free agency in the winter.
