Indians place Carrasco on DL following line drive to elbow

The Cleveland Indians placed right-hander Carlos Carrasco on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a right elbow contusion after the 31-year-old was struck by a line drive, the team announced.

Carrasco fell to the ground in pain after he was hit by a liner off the bat of Minnesota Twins designated hitter Joe Mauer in the second inning on Saturday.

He was attended to by trainers and removed from the game, then taken to hospital for examination.

"From where I was standing I thought it might have hit him in the face, so there was a little bit of a sense of relief, but it caught him right kind of on that funny bone,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said after his team's 9-3 loss, according to ESPN. "He was hurting.''

Carrasco will undergo an MRI on Monday to see if the injury is worse than a contusion, which is the current diagnosis.

"That's what they would certainly be looking for,'' Francona said, according to The Associated Press. "So far they're calling it a contusion, which would be fortunate and we'd be really happy.''

Carrasco is 8-5 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 15 starts this season. He also has two complete games under his belt.

In other moves, the Indians placed left-hander Tyler Olson on the 10-day DL with a lat strain and recalled pitchers Shane Bieber and Evan Marshall from Triple-A Columbus.
