Matt Chapman's thumb contusion has proven more debilitating than originally thought, as the Oakland Athletics have placed their third baseman on the 10-day disabled list.

In a corresponding move, infielder Franklin Barreto has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville for his third stint with the big club this season.

Chapman suffered a right thumb contusion Thursday after dealing with discomfort throughout the season, even receiving a cortisone shot during spring training. After sitting out Friday's game and undergoing an MRI, the Athletics made the decision to place the defensive wizard on the DL.

The A's are still reviewing Chapman's MRI results and will solicit the opinion of Dr. Steven Shin on Monday despite there being no structural damage, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com.

The 25-year-old Chapman has enjoyed an offensive breakout while continuing to display premium defense at the hot corner. Over 69 games, Chapman owns a .250/.346/.447 slash line with 10 home runs. By FanGraphs' defensive metrics, Chapman has already saved the Athletics nine runs this season.

Meanwhile, in his place, Barreto has featured in five big-league games, going 0-for-6 in limited action. In Triple-A, the natural middle infielder is posting a .236/.335/.441 slash line with seven home runs and a pair of stolen bases.

The likely candidates to fill in at third base in Chapman's absence are either Jed Lowrie or Chad Pinder, the latter of whom received the start in Friday's game.
