Report: Mets could make deGrom, Syndergaard available if losing continues

The New York Mets, mired in free fall and losers of their last six straight games, could be pushed to make their pair of aces available ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline if the season doesn't turn itself around.

Team officials told Joel Sherman of the New York Post that the Mets would be crazy not to open themselves up for business and humor offers for both Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard, with the latter being the easier one to move if a deal presented itself.

The idea would be to sell only one of deGrom or Syndergaard without fully pivoting toward a rebuild, according to Sherman's report.

If the Mets do decide to trade him, the New York Yankees seem to be a likely candidate, as they have been mentioned early in rumors for a starting pitcher. The rumors will likely only pick up since losing Jordan Montgomery to Tommy John surgery.

With the Mets parting with an elite pitcher and wanting to avoid a rebuild, Sherman suggests the Yankees would have to be open to parting with Gleyber Torres or Miguel Andujar to lure either deGrom or Syndergaard.

The Mets and Yankees begin the Subway Series on Friday evening at Citi Field. Masahiro Tanaka takes on deGrom in the first contest of the three-game set.
