Yankees' Montgomery to undergo Tommy John surgery
The New York Yankees will be without left-hander Jordan Montgomery for the remainder of the season, as the 25-year-old will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday, according to multiple reports.
Montgomery was initially expected to miss six-to-eight weeks after being diagnosed in early May with a flexor strain in his left elbow, but his forthcoming ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction will now sideline him for at least 12 months.
Following an impressive rookie campaign in 2017, Montgomery got off to an even better start this year, crafting a 3.62 ERA (120 ERA+) with a 1.35 WHIP across his first six starts before elbow discomfort forced him to the disabled list. In his absence, Domingo German has filled in as the Yankees' fifth starter, but the 25-year-old has done little to hang onto that gig, stumbling to a 6.33 ERA in five starts since joining the rotation May 6.
