Braves awaiting MRI after Acuna suffers gruesome leg injury

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was removed from Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox after injuring his left leg beating out a play at first base, and the club is still waiting to find out the severity.

The 20-year-old Acuna walked off the field with training staff in the top of the seventh inning and was taken to hospital for further evaluation. The results of an MRI remain unknown and the club might not know the severity until team doctors evaluate him on Monday, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com.

Acuna boarded a flight from Boston to Atlanta in a wheelchair Monday evening, though Bowman reports that the wheelchair does not indicate the severity of the injury as it could be used as a precaution to take any pressure off his leg.

Acuna, considered one of the top prospects in the game, earned a promotion from Triple-A at the end of April. Through his first 29 career games, the phenom owns a .259/.320/.448 slash line with five home runs and a pair of stolen bases.

Saturday's loss to Boston knocked the Braves out of first place in their division, as they now sit a half-game back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East lead.
