Cardinals' DeJong estimates he'll miss a month or more with fractured hand

The St. Louis Cardinals will be without star shortstop Paul DeJong for an extended period after he underwent surgery to repair his fractured left hand. The team hasn't provided a timeline, but the infielder said his absence is estimated to be between "four to eight" weeks.

"That's a huge range," DeJong said, according to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I’m just going to take it week by week. Ask me next week. Hopefully, I’ll be close to swinging."

Asked to guess how much time he'd miss, DeJong said, "probably about a month or more."

DeJong suffered the fracture after being hit by a pitch from Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Luis Garcia on May 17.

Since the injury, Jedd Gyorko, Greg Garcia, and Yairo Munoz have split time playing shortstop for the Red Birds.

In 41 games this season, DeJong is hitting .260/.351/.473 (127 OPS+) with eight home runs and eight doubles. He finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2017 behind runaway winner Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
