Shohei Ohtani has been nothing short of sensational, which could make him an early favorite to make the Midsummer Classic. And, if the Home Run Derby requires his assistance, Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia won't deter his star.

"That's a player's decision," Scioscia told Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times on Saturday.

Ohtani, a rookie, has hit six home runs in 90 plate appearances while posting a .321/.367/.619 slash line through 30 games. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the two-way phenom owns a 3.58 ERA and 3.39 FIP over 32 2/3 innings in six starts. His 32.8 percent strikeout rate ranks third among American League starters with at least 30 innings pitched.

Last year, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge - the eventual winner - were rookie participants in the Home Run Derby.

The 2018 All-Star Game will be held on July 17 at Nationals Park with the Home Run Derby going the day prior.
