Teixeira 'not surprised' by Cano's PED suspension

Mark Teixeira, the former New York Yankees first baseman who shared a clubhouse with Robinson Cano for a half-decade, wasn't exactly shocked to see the Seattle Mariners star receive an 80-game suspension earlier this week for violating the league's drug policy.

"I don't really want to get into too much detail, I love Robbie, but I'm not surprised," Teixeira said Thursday during an appearance on "The Michael Kay Show." "I don't want to get too much further but I think a lot of people are trying to say the same thing. (Yankees GM Brian) Cash(man) had to catch himself in an interview a couple days ago, but yeah, not surprised."

Teixeira, who retired after the 2016 campaign, noted that a couple of Cano's closest friends - Melky Cabrera and current teammate Nelson Cruz - were suspended for their roles in the Biogenesis scandal, and added that "you just kinda know" when a player is doping.

"Look at his situation here: Robbie Cano's assistant was on the list for Biogenesis," Teixeira said. "Of course, he has an assistant, you know, buys stuff for him. Alex Rodriguez got popped by Biogenesis. Melky (Cabrera) got popped.

"They're best friends. When someone gets lumped into that group, it's because there's evidence. There's a paper trail. There's a smoke trail."

Cano, an eight-time All-Star, opted Tuesday to accept an 80-game suspension from Major League Baseball after testing positive for Furosemide, a diuretic commonly used to mask the use of performance-enhancing drugs. In a statement, he said a doctor in his native Dominican Republic gave him the substance to treat a medical ailment, and the 35-year-old stressed that he has never taken a performance-enhancing drug.
