The St. Louis Cardinals continue to be beset by a series of injuries. They placed catcher Carson Kelly on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain on Thursday and recalled Steven Baron from Triple-A Memphis, the team announced.

Additionally, the Cardinals transferred right-handed starter Adam Wainwright to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Baron. Wainwright, who's dealing with an elbow injury, is out for the second time already this season after opening the campaign on the shelf with a hamstring issue.

If the pitcher's recovery goes to plan, he will be able to return just before July's All-Star break.

Baron appears to be something of a desperation move. The Cardinals already lost veteran backstop Yadier Molina for an extended period after he took a foul tip off the groin, forcing him to undergo surgery. Kelly was recalled to replace him, playing in eight games prior to suffering his own injury.

The 27-year-old Baron was hitting only .153/.167/.186 through 17 minor-league games. He'll likely serve as the the team's backup catcher for the time being behind Francisco Pena.

May has found the Cardinals riddled with injuries. Ace starter Carlos Martinez was lost to a strained lat, while relievers Luke Gregerson, Dominic Leone, and Tyler Lyons have each been placed on the disabled list with various ailments.
