Brewers place Braun on DL with middle back tightness

Jeff Hanisch / USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers have placed slugger Ryan Braun on the 10-day disabled list with middle back tightness, the team announced Thursday. The stint is retroactive to May 14, and a corresponding roster move will be made on Friday.

Braun missed his third straight game on Wednesday, and later said he was "far more likely than not" to be placed on the disabled list, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. A day later, his prediction came to fruition.

The 34-year-old felt discomfort on the right side of his back during Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies, leaving the contest after striking out for the fourth time that afternoon. He hasn't played since.

Braun has struggled at the plate this season, his 12th big-league campaign, batting .222/.268/.413 (81 OPS+) with five home runs in 37 games. He hasn't gone deep since April 20.

He'll be eligible to return to the lineup when the Brewers open a three-game set against the New York Mets at Miller Park on May 24.
