Report: Giants lose Panik for 6-8 weeks to thumb injury

The San Francisco Giants placed second baseman Joe Panik on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a torn ligament in his left thumb stemming from a sprain. And it's looking like it will take a lot longer than the minimum DL duration for it to heal.

Panik could be facing surgery, and is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, according to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Panik was seeking a second opinion to determine whether or not he has to go under the knife.

Panik sprained his thumb while administering a tag on Yasiel Puig in Friday's 6-4 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He underwent an MRI on Saturday to confirm the sprain, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Kelby Tomlinson took Panik's place at the keystone in both games of Saturday's doubleheader.

The 27-year-old jumped out to a hot start this season, smacking all three of his home runs through his first five games. However, he cooled at the plate in the ensuing weeks and now sports a .712 OPS through 100 plate appearances.
