Marlins' Realmuto will make season debut Tuesday
The Miami Marlins have their star back.
Catcher J.T. Realmuto, who's missed the first two-plus weeks of the season while recovering from a back contusion suffered in spring training, will be activated from the disabled list in time for Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees.
Realmuto will bat fifth Tuesday against Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka.
Realmuto participated in batting practice at Yankee Stadium on Monday, but the Marlins chose to wait one more day before activating him. He appeared in one rehab game on Saturday at High-A Jupiter and went 3-for-3 with a home run.
The 27-year-old is one of the few star names left on the Marlins following this winter's fire sale, though he requested a trade before this season began and has reportedly drawn some recent interest from the Mets. In 2017, Realmuto hit .278/.332/.451 with 17 homers, 65 RBIs, and eight stolen bases.
In a corresponding roster move, Miami optioned catcher Chad Wallach back to the minor leagues, according to Craig Mish of SiriusXM.
