Kershaw completes spring training without allowing run

Mark J. Rebilas / USA TODAY Sports

Clayton Kershaw closed out his spring training with another dominant outing, and if his performance in March is any indication, the Los Angeles Dodgers ace is poised to have another big season.

Kershaw tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, surrendering just one hit while striking out four. The only two baserunners he allowed were the result of a single and an error, with neither advancing into scoring position.

The three-time Cy Young winner didn't allow a single run over 21 1/3 innings, while fashioning a 0.84 WHIP. He struck out 23, walked five, and surrendered just 11 hits. In fact, Kershaw drove in more runs than he allowed this spring after going 1-for-3 with an RBI double against the San Diego Padres on March 18.

Pitching well in spring is nothing new for Kershaw, though this year's performance was the first time in 11 major-league spring trainings in which he didn't surrender a run.

YEAR IP ERA WHIP SO
2018 20.2 0.00 0.84 23
2017 24 2.63 0.79 28
2016 23 1.96 1.35 25
2015 22.1 1.61 0.99 22

Kershaw will next take the mound Opening Day at Dodger Stadium against the San Francisco Giants. It will be a franchise-record eighth consecutive Opening Day start for the left-hander.
