John Farrell to join ESPN's 'Baseball Tonight' broadcasts

John Farrell wasn't about to spend his post-managing days in isolation away from the game of baseball. Instead, the former Boston Red Sox manager is joining ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" broadcast as an analyst for the upcoming season, according to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.

His first assignment will be as part of the studio crew for the season-preview show next Wednesday, and will be part of Thursday night's pregame show to kick off the regular season often alongside the likes of former major-leaguers David Ross and Mark Teixeira.

Farrell was fired from his post as Red Sox manager after the team was ousted from the postseason by the Houston Astros in last October's American League Division Series. He spent five seasons as Beantown's bench boss, winning a World Series championship in 2013, his first campaign with the club as manager.

The move comes less than two weeks after the Cincinnati Reds hired Farrell as a scout, as reported by The Athletic's C. Trent Rosencrans. He is expected to perform both jobs through the season.

He interviewed for managing jobs with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals during the offseason, but both teams went in different directions.
