Nats' Murphy doesn't expect to be ready for Opening Day

Still working his way back from October knee surgery, Washington Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy conceded Wednesday that he probably won't be in the lineup on March 29 when his club kicks off its regular season against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

"I think it's reasonable to expect I won't be in the Opening Day lineup," Murphy told MASN's Mark Zuckerman.

Murphy, who had articular cartilage in his right knee repaired following Washington's defeat in the National League Division Series, hasn't appeared in any games this spring, and only recently started doing fielding drills that test his lateral movement. He's also been taking batting practice, but while Murphy said he's pleased with his progress, the two-time All-Star didn't offer a definitive timeline for his return.

"I don't want Davey (manager Dave Martinez) to have to manage (my playing time)," Murphy said. "I want to be really strong when I come back."

In Murphy's absence, the Nationals will likely open the season with veteran infielder Howie Kendrick - re-signed to a two-year, $7-million deal in January - as their regular second baseman, though Wilmer Difo could also see some time at the position.

Murphy, who hit .322/.384/.543 (136 OPS+) with 23 home runs and 43 doubles in 2017 en route to a second straight Silver Slugger Award, is heading into the final season of a three-year, $37.5-million contract.
