Report: Red Sox receiving trade interest for Marrero

The Boston Red Sox will soon have to make a decision on Deven Marrero's future with the organization.

The slick-fielding infielder is out of minor-league options and is reportedly drawing trade interest from teams, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Marrero has dazzled with his glove over parts of three seasons in the majors - appearing at first, second, and third base as well as shortstop - but has struggled at the plate. He's hitting just .208/.259/.333 with five home runs and 85 strikeouts in 109 games. The 27-year-old has done little to instill any confidence in the coaching staff that his bat will come around either, as he's hitting .184/.244/.263 with 16 strikeouts in 16 spring training games.

With Dustin Pedroia sidelined for the first month of the season, there can be a case made for keeping Marrero on the bench to be a late-game defensive replacement until the Gold Glove winner returns. Rafael Devers, Eduardo Nunez, and Xander Bogaerts are not considered strong defensive players and infield defense could be an issue for the Red Sox.

Mitch Moreland, Brock Holt, Sandy Leon, and Blake Swihart appear to be candidates for the team's bench spot, which could push Marrero out. Holt does have options, however, and the club could start him in the minors to hang onto Marrero.
