K-Rod dishes on his career: I didn't buy 437 saves at Walmart

Francisco Rodriguez plans to leave baseball on his own terms.

The veteran closer, who is in spring camp on a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, was candid when discussing his career and what keeps him going.

"I love the game. I don't think I have to prove anything. I don't think I went to Walmart and bought 900 appearances and 437 saves," the 36-year-old said, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb. "I did that with a lot of pride and hard work. This is the only thing I know how to do, play baseball. God gave me the opportunity to throw a baseball and I'm going to continue to do it."

Rodriguez is MLB's active leader in saves with 437, more than 100 ahead of fellow closer Huston Street, and despite a disappointing 2017 campaign with the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals, he isn't ready to end his career.

"I take a lot of pride in what I do,” he recently told David Murphy of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I am going to quit when I want to, not when other people want me to."

Rodriguez is one of many non-roster invitees in Phillies camp trying to make the team's Opening Day roster.
