Report: Red Sox unlikely to trade Bradley after signing Martinez

While J.D. Martinez reportedly finally agreed to terms with the Boston Red Sox, it doesn't look like he'll be getting meaningful playing time as an outfielder.

The Red Sox aren't likely to trade center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. after signing Martinez to a five-year, $110-million contract, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

While moving Bradley would deprive Boston of one of baseball's better defensive center fielders, it's believed that Andrew Benintendi or Mookie Betts could move from a corner outfield spot to make room for Martinez.

Martinez, who's struggled defensively as an outfielder, is likely relegated to designated hitting duties - but the Red Sox also have a logjam there. Hanley Ramirez, due $22.75 million next season, is currently on the depth chart as the team's DH, and, while he can play first base, Mitch Moreland occupies that spot as well and signed a two-year deal earlier this winter.

Bradley has factored heavily into trade rumors this winter; he's been linked at times to Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig and Cleveland Indians slugger Edwin Encarnacion. However, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has been quick to deny rumors involving Bradley.

The 27-year-old is under team control for two more seasons before becoming eligible for free agency. Over 133 games last year, Bradley posted a .245/.323/.402 slash line, hitting 10 percent worse than the league average by wRC+ with 17 home runs and eight stolen bases.
