Padres' Torres faces assault charges after December incident

San Diego Padres reliever Jose Torres was arrested in December following a domestic incident and now faces three charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and making threats or intimidation, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The dispute took place in Phoenix at a home shared by Torres and an unidentified woman, Acee reports. According to court documents obtained by the Union-Tribune, Torres pointed a gun at the victim, ripped a door off its hinges, and punched a hole in another door.

The Padres announced Monday that he was placed on the restricted list, but didn't offer an explanation at that time. In a statement Tuesday, they acknowledged the charges and announced he won't report to spring training.

"We are aware of the allegations involving Jose Torres, and he will not be reporting to spring training," the Padres wrote, according to Acee. "We take this matter very seriously and are fully cooperating with the investigation being conducted by the Commissioner's Office. We will not have any further comment at this time."

Torres' next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 20.

The 24-year-old Venezuelan reached the major leagues in 2016 and has pitched in 66 games over the past two seasons.
