The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with shortstop Jose Iglesias, agreeing to a one-year deal, the team announced on Wednesday. It's reportedly worth $6.275 million, according to Anthony Fenech of Free Press Sports.

Iglesias initially requested $6.8 million with the Tigers filing at $5.6 million.

Despite the new contract, Iglesias' long-term future in Detroit appears very much up in the air. With the team focused on rebuilding, general manager Al Avila admitted Iglesias isn't part of the plan.

"We've talked about it on a regular basis," Avila said during an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket. "He's one of those guys that, quite frankly, probably will not be with us in the long run. We have to make sure that we develop a good shortstop in our system for our future."

The Iglesias is known strictly for his defense, having combined to a 22.6 UZR since 2014 - the sixth-best among qualified shortstops. He finished 2017 hitting .255/.288/.369 with a 71 wRC+ and 1.6 WAR across 130 games.
