Padres owner happy with offer to Hosmer, suggests Boras disagrees

Free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer still doesn't have a baseball home for 2018, though he's got a couple contract offers on the table. The San Diego Padres have been one of the more aggressive suitors, having reportedly extended a seven-year offer worth less than $140 million.

Those numbers were later disputed by Hosmer's agent, Scott Boras. Whatever the Padres offered, club co-owner and executive chairman Ron Fowler isn't particularly interested in changing their bid, according to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

"I think we were pretty creative in the way we put a contract proposal together," Fowler said. "We like it. I don't know if Mr. Boras likes it, but that's probably another story."

Boras was apparently looking for an eight-year deal worth around $200 million for his client.

Padres position players are scheduled to report to spring training on Feb. 18. If a deal for Hosmer is not completed, they will likely open the season with Wil Myers as their starting first baseman. Signing the 28-year-old slugger would move Myers to the outfield, while providing a little extra balance to a mostly right-handed lineup.
