Free agent Garza to undergo shoulder surgery

Jeff Hanisch / USA TODAY Sports

Matt Garza, a free-agent right-hander who spent the last four years with the Milwaukee Brewers, will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder - an injury sustained in a June collision with Brewers teammate Jesus Aguilar, his agent, Nez Balelo, told MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

Garza's timeline remains unclear, though Jimmy Nelson, who emerged as one of the Brewers' top starters last year, underwent surgery on a torn labrum in September and is expected to miss a "chunk" of the 2018 season, according to general manager David Stearns.

Last year, in the final season of a four-year, $50-million deal, Garza managed a 4.94 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over 22 starts and a pair of relief appearances for the Brewers. After that June 3 collision with Aguilar at Miller Park, Garza, who opened the campaign on the disabled list with a lat injury, was officially diagnosed with a bruised chest.
