Report: Padres extend 7-year offer to Hosmer

The San Diego Padres are committed to their pursuit of free agent Eric Hosmer, and their reported offer to the first baseman certainly demonstrates that.

Hosmer has received a seven-year offer from the franchise, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, though no dollar figure is provided.

The Padres have been linked to Hosmer for the bulk of the winter as they believe the former World Series champ and four-time Gold Glove winner is the perfect fit for the rebuilding club. So perfect, in fact, they are willing to move Wil Myers to the outfield in order to accommodate Hosmer. Any deal for Hosmer would also shatter Myers' six-year, $83-million extension - which serves as the current franchise record - and would cost the Padres a compensation pick as he rejected a qualifying offer from the Kansas City Royals.

Hosmer is coming off a career year in which he hit .318/.385/.498 with 25 home runs and 31 doubles. At 28, he's also the youngest of the top free agents.

It was reported last month the Padres were mulling a six-year, $120-million deal for Hosmer. The St. Louis Cardinals and Royals are also believed to be in the mix to sign the one-time All-Star.
