Yankees 'not finished' adding this winter

There's still more to come for the Evil Empire.

Despite trading for reigning National League MVP Giancarlo Stanton and re-signing CC Sabathia, the New York Yankees are expecting to make a few more deals before spring training opens in February.

"I know (Brian Cashman's) upstairs working," Yankees president Randy Levine said Wednesday, according to Mike Mazzeo of the New York Daily News. "He's not finished. And we're hopeful that there's more to be done before spring training and Opening Day. … We're the Yankees. We always want to get better. … What that is? I'll leave that to the (front office)."

After trading away Chase Headley and Starlin Castro in separate deals, the Yankees could use help at either second or third base. Top prospects Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres could fit into those positions, though the Yankees may want to add another veteran infielder to slot in to start the season, allowing the two young players a chance to further develop.

The Yankees have also reportedly been heavily engaged in talks to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates ace, Gerrit Cole. The 27-year-old right-hander is under team control through the next two seasons, and is projected to make a very reasonable $7.5 million through arbitration this winter. The Yankees are believed to be reluctant in including Torres in any deal for Cole.

Acquiring young, controllable, and affordable players is a must for the Yankees as they wish to try and stay under the luxury-tax threshold this winter in order to reset any penalties ahead of next winter's star-studded free-agent class. The club currently has roughly $167 million in salary committed to next season when considering arbitration raises, according to Cots Baseball.
