The Miami Marlins parted ways with another veteran Wednesday, releasing right-hander Edinson Volquez.
Volquez agreed to a two-year, $22-million deal with the Marlins last winter, but isn't slated to pitch next season following Tommy John surgery in August. The Marlins are on the hook the remaining $13 million of Volquez's contract, but the move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster.
The 34-year-old went 4-8 with a 4.19 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 81 strikeouts in 92 1/2 innings. He was the Marlins' Opening Day starter last year, and also tossed a no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 3.
Miami is interested in bringing Volquez back on a minor-league deal as he rehabs.
