Report: Cubs included virtual reality experience in pitch to Ohtani
The Chicago Cubs added cutting-edge technology to their recruitment strategy for Shohei Ohtani, including a virtual reality experience showing what it was like to be a member of the Cubs, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
Known as the league's top executive after ending championship droughts for both the Boston Red Sox and Cubs, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein wanted to impress the two-way superstar.
What the virtual reality experience included is not public, though Morosi's report states that it showed Ohtani's "possible life as a Cub."
On Friday, Ohtani agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Angels after weeks of deliberation. Along with the Angels and Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers comprised the finalists to recruit Ohtani.
Perhaps the virtual reality experience should have eschewed the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower tour, and focused more on Chicago-style pizza.
