The New York Yankees are reportedly poised to keep Brian Cashman running the show for the foreseeable future, as the club is said to be finalizing a five-year, $25-million contract extension with their longtime general manager, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale.

In 2014, Cashman - who took over as general manager in 1998 - received a three-year extension from the Yankees reportedly worth around $9 million. Among active baseball ops department heads, only Brian Sabean of the San Francisco Giants and Billy Beane of the Oakland Athletics have held their positions longer than Cashman, who started with the Yankees as an intern in 1986 and is now the second-longest tenured GM in franchise history.

In 20 years under Cashman, the Yankees have been one of the most prosperous franchises in baseball, winning four World Series titles while missing the playoffs just four times over that span. Though the Yankees haven't hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy since 2009, the club enjoyed its finest season since in a half-decade this past summer, coming within one win of an American League pennant largely by virtue of Cashman's expedited rebuild that infused the organization with considerable young talent.
