Mariners acquire Dee Gordon, international money from Marlins

The Miami Marlins jettisoned their first major asset of the offseason, sending second baseman Dee Gordon and $1 million in international bonus pool money to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for prospects Nick Neidert, Robert Dugger, and Christopher Torres.

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said Gordon will immediately shift to center field. The 29-year-old has never played a professional game in the outfield, but Seattle already employs Robinson Cano and Jean Segura in the middle infield.

In 2017, Gordon posted a .308/.341/.375 slash line across 158 games, while leading MLB in stolen bases with 60. Over the next three years, he's guaranteed $38.9 million and has a $14-million team option for 2021.

The 21-year-old Neidert posted a 2.76 ERA and 3.39 FIP over 104 1/3 innings with High-A Modesto and was the second-best prospect in the Mariners' system, according to MLB Pipeline. After getting promoted to Double-A, the right-hander struggled with a 6.56 ERA over 23 1/3 innings.

The 22-year-old Dugger posted a 3.94 ERA over 45 2/3 innings with High-A Modesto.

Torres, a 19-year-old shortstop, slashed .238/.324/.435 over 48 games with 13 stolen bases and six home runs in Low-A.
