Report: Giants have had discussions about J.D. Martinez
In addition to being involved in the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes, the San Francisco Giants may have at least broached the subject of chasing one of the biggest fish in this year's free-agent pond.
Sources told John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle that the Giants have reportedly had discussions about free-agent outfielder J.D. Martinez.
Martinez is not going to come cheap to any club interested in his services, as a report Tuesday suggested that agent Scott Boras has placed his 30-year-old client's asking price at seven years and $210 million.
San Francisco is known to be seeking outfield improvements this winter and has been linked with multiple names in potential trades, as well as those available in free agency. The team didn't confirm or deny its potential interest in Martinez when asked by Shea on Wednesday.
"The doors aren't closing on options," general manager Bobby Evans said. "We want to explore every scenario that works for us or comes our way in a deal."
Martinez hit 45 home runs and slugged a major-league leading .690 in 2017, a season he split between the Tigers and Diamondbacks. Boras has already likened Martinez to Stanton, the NL MVP finalist who the Giants are said to have the "most intense" interest in acquiring from the Miami Marlins.
Other outfielders the Giants are said to have interest in reportedly include Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr., and Cincinnati Reds speedster Billy Hamilton.
