Report: Free agent J.D. Martinez hires Scott Boras
Outfielder J.D. Martinez, the prized free agent of this year's class, has switched sports agencies and hired Scott Boras to represent him, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
The 30-year-old Martinez is the most valuable position player on the market after coming off a career year split between the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Considering what teams have spent in free agency, he was all but guaranteed to be offered a $100-million deal. With Boras in the fold, that number could go up. The savvy sports agent is known for seeking top dollar for his clients, which include Alex Rodriguez, who famously signed a 10-year, $252-million deal with the Texas Rangers in 2000. More recently, Boras helped negotiate a seven-year, $175-million deal for Washington Nationals stud pitcher Stephen Strasburg in 2016.
Martinez finished the 2017 season hitting .303/.376/.690 with 45 home runs and 104 RBIs despite missing all of April with a foot sprain. Among hitters with 250 plate appearances, he led the league with a .690 slugging percentage and was third in baseball with a 166 wRC+.
