Look: New York papers roast Sanchez for Game 2 blunder
Gary Sanchez dropped the ball, and now the New York papers are making sure he remembers it.
After Sanchez's drop allowed Jose Altuve - who would have been out by several feet otherwise - to score the game-winning run for the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday, the young catcher once again faced questions about his defensive abilities behind the plate. By the time Sanchez and his Yankees teammates had returned home, New York tabloids had already stirred the pot, using their back pages to deliver an epic roast of the 24-year-old for his blunder - which helped put the team in an 0-2 series deficit against the Astros.
Although his mistake is now getting the full back-page treatment, Sanchez received support from an unlikely ally in Astros catcher Brian McCann, who praised his former Yankee teammate's defensive skills after the game.
To Sanchez's credit, he didn't shy away from the media after Saturday's contest and tried to take ownership of what happened on the fateful play.
"The bottom line is he's going to be out and I dropped the ball," Sanchez said, per the New York Post's Dan Martin.
