Alex Cora is headed back to Beantown.

The Boston Red Sox officially hired Cora - currently the bench coach for the American League champion Houston Astros - as their 47th manager Sunday.

Cora receives a three-year contract that includes a fourth-year option in 2021, according to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal.

"I am extremely honored and humbled to be named manager of the Boston Red Sox," Cora said in a statement. "Returning to the Red Sox and the city of Boston is a dream come true for me and my family and I look forward to working towards the ultimate goal of winning another championship for this city and its great fans."

Because the Astros have advanced to the World Series, which begins on Tuesday in Los Angeles, neither the Red Sox nor Cora will comment on the hiring until after the season is over, in accordance with MLB policy. Cora will continue to serve as the Astros' bench coach through the end of the World Series.

"I want to express my appreciation for Jim Crane, Jeff Luhnow, A.J. Hinch, and the entire Houston Astros organization for giving me the chance to start my coaching career," Cora continued. "It has been a very special season and an incredible organization to be a part of and I am looking forward to the World Series and winning with this group."

The 42-year-old Cora is currently in his first season as a major-league coach with the Astros. Previously he had worked as a broadcaster. A native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, he also served as his country's general manager during the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

As a player, Cora spent 14 seasons in the major leagues as an infielder with six teams, including seven years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and four seasons with the Red Sox. While in Boston as a player he was a member of their 2007 World Series championship club.
